
Museum “Vazrazhdane”
The Revival and Constituent Assembly Museum is located on Saedinenie Square in the Old Capital city of Veliko Tarnovo, next to the Historical Museum. Among the locals, the museum is known as Konaka, which comes from Turkish and means “police department” during the Ottoman Empire. Before it became a museum, it was Konak.
Vazrazhdane Museum is a cruciform building with two floors on the north and four on the south. It was built by one of the most famous Bulgarian architects in the XIX century – Kolyu Ficheto.
On three floors of the Revival and Constituent Assembly Museum you can visit and see the historical exposition, where you will find exhibits of Christian art during the Ottoman rule, a collection of icons from the middle of the XVI century, paintings and works of art from Tryavna School , to the artists Stanislav Dospevski and Nikolai Pavlovich.
Museum of Revival and Constituent Uprising in Veliko Tarnovo presents exhibits paying attention to the struggle of the Bulgarian Church for independence, as well as the preservation of Bulgarian literary activity in the community centers.
In the exposition of the Renaissance Museum you can see objects and documents from the various crafts practiced in the Renaissance – pottery, fur, goldsmithing, ironwork, tailoring and many others.
Photographic material and artistic illustrations in the museum tell about the trade and economy of Tarnovgrad, as well as the origins of factory production.
On the second floor of Vazrazhdane Museum you can trace the most significant moments of the national liberation activities of the population of the Tarnovo region, namely the haidouk movements, various uprisings, including the April Uprising of 1876.
On the third floor of the museum is the hall in which the Constituent Assembly in Tarnovo was organized and held with a grand opening on February 10, 1879. The purpose of the First Grand National Assembly was to draft a basic law – the First Bulgarian Constitution. This remarkable event marks the beginning of modern Bulgaria.
