Sarafkina House
Sarafka’s house is located in the old part of Veliko Tarnovo near the church “St. St. Constantine and Elena”. It was built in 1861 by an unknown craftsman by order of Dimo Sarafa, a prominent merchant and saraff. He lives there with his wife Anastasia Sarafkina. The house is located on the famous old street “Gurko”. The building is an emblem of the street from the Renaissance era.
Sarafka’s house consists of 5 floors, a rarity for the architecture of that time. Wooden shutters cover the windows facing Gurko Street. There are several supporting columns, the representative rooms are located on the upper 2 floors, on the fourth floor there is a vestibule overlooking the meanders of the Yantra River, where the Art Gallery and the “Asenevtsi” Monument are amphitheatrically surrounded
In 1915, the house was bought by Metropolitan Hilarion Nevrokopski for BGN 6,000. In 1925, after his death, it was inherited by his sister’s two sons.
The house was restored and turned into a museum in 1981. The exhibition “Folk art from the Tarnovo region” is housed today in the Sarafka house on “Gurko” street in Veliko Tarnovo.
From the movie The Queen of Thorns, shots were taken in Sarafka’s house.
