Art Gallery “Boris Denev”

One of the many prides of the city of Veliko Tarnovo is the Boris Denev National Art Gallery, which is located in the Asenevtsi Park. The gallery is housed in an ancient building, fully adapted to its needs and is of extremely important architectural and historical importance.

In the period between 1926 and 1985, the building had a variety of uses, including a school of applied arts and crafts, a veterinary institute, a police station and a people’s militia. It received its status as an art gallery in 1985 on the occasion of the large-scale celebrations of the 800th anniversary of the uprising of Assen and Peter.

The “Boris Denev” art gallery is one of the oldest in the country and has a permanent exhibition on its first floor entitled “Veliko Tarnovo through the eyes of Bulgarian artists”, and on the second floor freely selected works from the gallery’s collection are exhibited. There are three main sections of works: painting, graphics and the sculptor.

In 2003, the famous Bulgarian artist and classic in Bulgarian art, Boris Denev, was chosen as patron of the gallery, due to his many works related to the city of Veliko Tarnovo.

To date, the gallery has one of the largest and most diverse collections, containing the works of Nikolay Pavlovich, Iliya Petrov, Dimitar Gyuzhenov, Ivan Lazarov, Dechko Uzunov, Ivan Funov, Georgi Chapkenov, Marko Markov and many others.

The National Art Gallery “Boris Denev” is also the annual host of the exhibition of illustrations of children and adolescents who participated in the competition “My Hometown”, organized by the Regional Department of Education Veliko Tarnovo together with the Regional Library “Petko R. Slaveikov”.

Every year, the gallery also hosts a unique exhibition in honor of the birthday of its patron Boris Deneuve, known and recognizable for his landscapes, portraits and figurative compositions.
