General Gurko Street in Veliko Tarnovo is located in the Varusha district and is one of the central streets of the Old Town offering beautiful view of Yantra river and Asenevtsi Monument.
The street is named after the great General Joseph Gurko, who 7 July 1877 solemnly passes through it, accompanied by Russian troops, celebrating the liberated Tarnovgrad without any casualties.
The procession passed under the stormy applause of the people of Tarnovo, and General Gurko addressed them with the words: “Heroes, defend your old capital, defend your country!”. That is why General Gurko Street is one of the most significant moments of the Russian-Turkish Liberation War.
